Zhang Tiezhu, School President and the President of Academic Degree Evaluation Committee, extended the most sincere congratulations to the students of class of 2017 on behalf of all teachers and students still at school in his address. Zhang shared the story of “2 hard-working study groups,” namely 2 dormitories comprising 12 students from School of Life Sciences who had been admitted to key universities for postgraduate studies. He also told the stories of Yu Yuewei, a graduate from School of Transport and Vehicle Engineering who is gifted at invention with a brave technological brain, of Bai Chuanhao, a student entrepreneur from School of Foreign Language Study who persists in starting a business, and of Wang Hongxiang, a SDUT-known filial son from School of Management, and applauded for their hard work and remarkable achievements.

At the end of his speech, the President, based on the success of Ma Yun and outstanding alumni (Jiao Bo, Kong Zhongwei, Wei Zhenwen and Kong Lingbo), offered all graduates the following four suggestions (in original wording):

First, to work hard to make your dream come true. Pursuing dreams needs perseverance and persistence. Dealing with difficulties and striding all the way need enough energy, which requires one to go further in the right direction by trial and error and to draw lessons from setbacks. It is no time for ease and comfort. Never shrink from hardship at a youthful age.

Second, to stay strong-minded and to aim high. Hardship is right there for each success. No one can live a comfortable life without any drawback, and thus cannot take anything for granted. Everyone needs to face the difficulty and recession in life and work. Just stick to your dreams and forge ahead, then you will refashion yourselves and have a promising future.

Third, to keep studying with energy and enthusiasm. A respectable, successful man with remarkable achievements must be a lifelong learner. Continual learning is the only way to progress and success. I hope you can save time to read and to learn a lot more in the age of information explosion and rapid development, so as to lengthen your youth and enrich your life.

Fourth, to be grateful and to work hard with positive thinking. Being indebted and repaying to others, the society reflects one’s moral quality, state of mind and responsibility undertakings. I hope you can work hard, and keep gratitude and devotion in mind, gathering strength for a warmer and more harmonious society.
